Want to get in the mood for Halloween?

In keeping with the season, I just thought it would be fun to remember a few of nature’s everyday horror stories that may be playing out in your house right now. Sleep well!

Termites! What do you mean we have termites? For many people, the thought of termites is a nightmare. The think of these barely visible little monsters venturing out from their hidden lair with the dastardly intent to consume your home piece by piece from the ground up. In many ways this is an accurate description, and their fears are valid, but wait till we tell them about the fungus!

Yes fungus, just the name sounds disgusting. In reality, it is scary, fungus infection causes far more damage to structures here in the valley than termites. Fungus is like a “B” movie creature that invisibly spreads by airborne spores that infect the wood portions of your home on contact. Once established it grows within the wood like a cancer destroying the cells as it goes while of course sending out more spores to expand its damaging domain.

Then there are the wood-boring beetles. These hardheaded little creatures drill into the wood headfirst making numerous galleries and tunnels and basically turning wood portions of your home into dust. In these hidden galleries they raise the next generation of invaders that hatch out as maggot like wood munching machines stopping only when old enough to breed and lay eggs of their own.

And finally, we have the fraudulently named Carpenter Bees and Carpenter Ants. They sure sound beneficial until you learn that what they are constructing is tunnels and galleries through to wood of your home. The Carpenter bees just cruise right up and drill a thumb size home right into the wood of your house to lay their eggs, you can hear them buzzing inside the wall and even loader when they wiz right past your ear on their way in and out. The Carpenter ants just move right in and bivouac just like invading troops. They trail in from their main headquarters outside, hollow out an area of wood in your home and set up camp, then they start searching for another area in your home to invade.

If you find yourself caught in this horror flick and need help, call me, I may know a guy.
