What do you mean I can’t get the good stuff?

Has anyone been keeping an eye on Sacramento lately? I know you have been watching to see what businesses they have closed lately, but I mean have you noticed any actual legislation they have been passing? Well, here is one you probably have not heard about. AB 1788 signed by the Governor on September 29, 2020 prohibits the use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, (SGARS) supposedly due to their threat to mountain lions and other wildlife.

The second-generation anticoagulant baits are the “good stuff”. These baits are typically more effective at controlling rodents because they, in most cases, require only a single feeding to provide a lethal dose, compared to the first-generation rodenticides that require multiple feedings (typically 3 or more within 2-3 days) to gain a lethal dose.

The first-generation baits have proven to be less effective due to the transient nature of some rodents and can also lead to rodents becoming bait shy if they receive a sublethal dose. As you can imagine, wary rodents don’t always feel comfortable enough to stay around in one place for 3 days repeatedly feeding on the same bait placement. If they can’t or don’t get back to feed on the bait for the second or third time, they may receive a sublethal dose and becomes bait shy therefore being even more difficult to control in the future.

This bill prohibits all uses of the second-generation baits with only several exemptions. Of course, use by government employees is exempt. Licensed pest control companies can still use these products around the exterior of food processing facilities, food storage warehouses, breweries, wineries, and medical waste facilities, and we will. But most importantly, all homeowner use or pest control company uses in or around homes or other structures is prohibited.

So no, you can’t get the good stuff anymore, and in most cases, we can’t get it for you either.
